To: CBC
The National, The Magazine story on Crime and Punishment
Att: Kelly Creighton, senior producer
Please advise me why you misrepresented the position that my family has taken on this issue.
The program on Crime and Punishment aired Mar 21 and the interview selections did not accurately represent our endeavors, our
family values or the issues that we have worked so hard on.
The quotes that were aired were taken entirely out of context.
Your journalists did not once mention the main thrust of our campaign:
Victims rights
Rehabilitation for convicted criminals
Mandatory counselling
Early intervention
Bail reform
Gang swarming and organized crime status
Etc.
My family emphasized to your staff at the outset of the interview that our position was not to incarcerate youths with adults.
We also emphasized that our petition addresses the most violent and abhorrent of crimes against the innocent.
None of these were aired.
We ask only that the trial and law applicable to the trial and conviction be the same as in the ordinary court system.
"We want one law for violent crimes in this country"
I had also stated during the interview that the ordinary court system and criminal code has adequate provisions to provide
discretionary measures for youth criminals.
We NEVER suggested that youth be placed in adult jails with the general population.
Your selective reporting has maligned our family efforts and those of millions of Canadians that are trying to make a positive
change to our Justice system. I demand a televised report to accurately portray our true position.
I was originally contacted by Paule Mercier and told that she could help me with my petition. What you have done has damaged
my credibility and set back the work of not only my family but that of victims across Canada
