Beating victim's condition worsens

Beating victim's condition worsens - The Markham Economist & Sun - August 24, 1999

by Jennifer Brown

Supporters of Jonathan Wamback and his family can now monitor the Newmarket boy's condition online, through a website set up in his name.

By keying in www.jonathanwamback.com anyone can check the boy's health, email messages and add their name to a petition the family has started demanding changes be made to the Young Offenders Act.

For two months now, Jonathan's parents Lozanne and Joe have been by his side.

It was June 29 when the boy was attacked, beaten and kicked in the head by three teens.

The suspects, ages 16 and 17, have been arrested and charged with attempted murder. They will appear in Newmarket court Sept. 9 and are currently free on bail.

Since the beating, Jonathan has lost 34 pounds and his condition has been deteriorating. His left arm has been put in a cast in the hope it will stop the involutary muscle contractions.

If that doesn't work, his parents may have to consider a form of therapy that involves injecting botulism into the muscle tissue.

The toxin then surrounds the nerve receptors at the junction of the muscle and paralyzes it for up to four months.

"It is very painful and another assault on our son's body" Joe said.

The time spent in hospital has taken its toll on Jonathan's overall health, and watching the rapid loss of weight has been traumatic. "Jonathan is so agitated through the night, he cries because of the pain," Lozanne said.
