  • They're fighting the good fight - Senate will be the last stand for youth crime bill's foes
Editorial, The Toronto Sun, October 25, 2001

  • On April 10, we will be unveiling a new advertising campaign at a press conference in Toronto.

This campaign will involve placing ads in bus shelters (4’ x 6’) in cities from Halifax to Vancouver, directing Canadians to our web site.

All creative work was donated by HARROD & MIRLIN FCB of Toronto and the printing and bus shelter space was donated by Mediacom of Toronto.

    The ads are very exciting.

These ads refer to another web address www.theYOA.com.

This address is short and easy to remember but will bring those who read the ad to the regular http://www.jonathanwamback.com web site so they can print and circulate a written petition or send an electronic petition to the government.

  • Fight the Power
Editorial, The Toronto Sun, March 27, 2000

  • In the week of March 22 CBC-TV - the National's "Magazine" aired what can only be said was the most distorted presentation of the Wamback's campaign to reform the Young Offenders Act. The story focussed on the fact that there were two alternatives - to throw Young Offenders in adult jails to rot or to give them rehabilitative training as is the case in the Quebec system.

The Wamback's have NEVER advocated that Young Offenders be incarcerated with adults and have always advocated that there be rehabilitative measures provided for these youths.

Yet in it's zealous attempt to portray the cause of toughening the Young Offenders Act for SENTENCING as reactionary rather than what it is - a plea for help from innocent victims - this program did a disservice to all of those who support a sane and rational approach to youth violence in Canada. The CBC aired an apology but it opened many of our eyes to the fact that the media, particularly government-controlled media, can manipulate the facts to their own ends.

  • Jonathan's Dad, Joe, issued a press release on Monday, January 10, 2000 announcing that several different victims of violence were joining forces to change the wording of the Young Offenders Act.

Over 80 journalists from coast to coast attended. Coverage of the press release was carried on radio and TV stations across Canada and support has been rolling in across the nation not only from ordinary Canadians but from celebrities and journalists alike.

Senior officials from the Toronto Police Association as well as "Pinball" Clemons and Adrion Smith of the Toronto Argonauts and Spyder Jones attended the event in support of Jonathan.

  • Joe was interviewed by Dan Matheson on Canada AM on CTV at 7:30 AM EST on Wednesday November 17, 1999.

Joe was asked to comment on the violence that has been evident lately in the Toronto area and particularly in the aftermath of another terrible beating of a 15 year-old boy in a park near his home by a gang of teenagers. Tragically, in this case the young boy died.

Joe commented that although the majority of young individuals are law-abiding, there is a small number of those who have no respect for individuals and property. In those cases where the individuals are involved in violent offenses, they should be named so as to warn others of the possible danger they might impose. In addition, the Young Offenders Act should be changed so that they receive harsh sentences so that they understand that they are responsible for their actions.
