An Ode to Jonathan
Grief and anger, frustration and pandemonium
shadow together, dawn of our new Millenium
Add a total helplessness, combined with gross injustice
and what a God-awful-mess, we've made of system this!
In Canada, you say? There is no way!
"We're modern and fair, so just go away!"
And THAT my friends, is exactly the problem
Reality and 'legal trends' have nothing left in common.
The undercurrent of violence and premeditated cruelty
has reached an alarming tolerance, in this fragile society.
Our laws are designed with gloves and wigs in mind
and in politics we find, a drama that is one-of-a-kind!
"WAKE UP!!!", I say, "not just to the boy,
at fifteen who may, in a coma be coy"
To scream and shout : " How can you watch and do nothing?"
When without a doubt, this brutal ACT is just unfolding...
So quick is Ottawa, to join troops in 'Dessert Storm'
and atrocities in Kosova, we find, beyond OUR norm
Yet to clean up our own place, time just cannot be found
Deliberate acts of violence on our streets do abound
One day a bunch of thugs, smashed up this only boy
then they walked away, as if from a broken toy
It comes to our legal system, so technically perfect,
wearing the costume of "Young Offenders Act".
"We are so sorry, to you no offence we mean,
but criminals in this story are barely seventeen"
Your entire life, they've upset, in a most garish and violent way,
Yet we simply cannot get, the use of our laws to put them away!!!
To those in charge, only this much I've got to say:
that in our laws-at-large, justice has gone astray!
How long must it be, before this travesty is rid?
What if the next casualty, is your very own kid?
